How’d you get
the name Half Vast?
Rick needed a commercial for a community
show and wrote the following joke: “Brought to you by
R. F. Kinnaird Enterprises, a semi-large firm. Some people
call it the most ‘half vast enterprise’ they’ve
ever seen.” When the Kinnairds needed a name for the
rental business, Rick’s first thought was “Half
Vast Enterprises.”

What happened to your e-zine?
We published an electronic magazine about Hatteras Island during 2006. It turned out to be a lot of work and, since we weren't getting paid for it, we decided it would be easier on us to write a blog instead. You can read the issues of the e-zine we published on our E-zine page. You can read our blog by visiting halfvaster.blogspot.com.

How can I submit a photo to you for use
on the web site?
First make sure you have the permission
of everyone in the photo to submit — we certainly don't
want to put anyone online who doesn't want to be there. Then
email your photo(s) in jpg format to info@halfvastenterprises.com
along with a caption.

How can I reserve one of your houses?
Hatteras Realty handles reservations
for Sound
Mind & Body. Hearts of Maine handles reservations
for Bar
Harbor View Cottage.

Why do you have this web site?
Because we want to! Shelby’s a
web designer (among other things) and we decided to use her
skills to tell folks about our houses in our own way. Sure,
you can read about the properties on the Hatteras Realty and
Hearts of Maine web sites, but we're hoping our site will
give you additional "insider's" information. We
also want to build a sense of community for people who love
the Outer Banks and Maine as much as we do. We think that
by sharing our experiences and those of others, we can all
benefit.

How can we send you a comment?
We love hearing from people who have
vacationed in one of our houses! Please send comments (good
and bad) to info@halfvastenterprises.com.

What should we do with trash during our
stay?
In Maine – put trash in tied bags
and place in the dumpster provided.
In Avon – please check the white guest book from Hatteras
Realty for trash pick-up days. (If the book is missing, contact
them at 252-995-5466.) Push the trash cans out to the end
of the driveway the night before pick-up (they come EARLY)
and please, please push them out when you leave for the week.
Remember they will only pick up trash that is in the cans,
not beside them. Bulky items may be taken to the dumpsters
behind Hatteras Realty. A special note for Sound Mind &
Body … if you place the cans right in the curve of the
road, the automated trucks can't pick them up.

How does the garbage disposal work
in Maine?
Look at the bottom of the handle, it
is a piece of white plastic in the shape of a “T."
One end of the “T” has a black dot in it, about
1⁄2 inch in diameter; that black dot is a magnet. Look
in the throat of the disposal, there are two bumps in the
throat (on the side nearest the living room). The black dot
of the T must be placed between those two bumps. Run water
while activating the disposal. Note: it can be temperamental;
if it doesn't work the first time, take a deep breath and
try again. You must have the appropriate karma.

What’s the deal on the pool and tennis
courts at Hatteras Realty?

How does your referral program work?
Basically, if you refer someone to Sound Mind & Body and they stay at least a
week, we'll pay you $100. The more referrals you
send us, the more you will earn! People you refer must be
first-time renters (meaning they haven't stayed previously
in Sound Mind & Body). To participate
in this program, send us the following information: your name
and address, the name(s) of the people you referred and the
dates of their stay. You may email this information to info@halfvastenterprises.com
or send it via U.S. Mail to Half Vast
Enterprises, P.O. Box 489, Avon NC 27915-0489.
As soon as your referral completes their stay, we will send
you a check for $100. It couldn't be easier! Please note
this is being offered by the owners, Rick & Shelby Kinnaird,
and not Hatteras Realty.

Where are the web cams on Hatteras Island?

What’s in the owner’s closet?
Dead bodies, voodoo dolls and pins,
bags of cash, jewels … Actually, cleaning supplies (legally
we can't leave them out for you), spices, beach towels, sheets,
tools, hardware, extra batteries, light bulbs, air filters,
old clothes for painting and maintenance, extra wine glasses,
plates, bowls and stuff like that. Exciting, huh?

Do we need to clean up before we leave?
Yes. Please remove all trash, vaccum,
wash your dishes (leaving them in the dishwasher is fine)
and take all of your personal belongs. The housekeeping staff
has many houses to clean on the day you leave and they don't
have time to clean each one as thoroughly as they'd like.
Anything you can do to help is always appreciated. If the
house is not clean when you arrive, please contact Hatteras
Realty.

Do we need to bring our own sheets and
towels?
In Maine — bath towels, kitchen
towels and sheets are provided. You might want to bring beach
towels for a trip to Echo
Lake or a (brisk) swim in the ocean.
In Avon — you are responsible for providing all sheets
and towels. If you don’t want to bring them, Hatteras
Realty has a rental
program. (It is difficult for us to provide them because
there is no commercial laundry nearby.)

If I have a problem who do I call?
For specific problems or emergencies:
In Avon — call Hatteras Realty at 252-995-5466.
In Maine — call the property manager as described in
your welcome packet.
If you have a general comment about the house or a suggestion
about something we could do to improve your experience, email
us at info@halfvastenterprises.com.
