Fishing Avon Pier Nothing's been biting at the Avon Pier and, even if it was, no one would have noticed because it's been so stinkin' hot very few people have been fishin'. The water is 79 degrees, calm and green, perfect for fishing. There just aren't any fish. Someone caught a 33" Cobia on July 17 and they've spotted some big fish further out, but at the pier it's been small spade, spot and croakers. Tropical Storm Beryl came through on July 19 and cooled things off a bit. Hopefully, the fishing will improve. Rodanthe Pier We now know where all the fish have gone – to the
waters off the Rodanthe Pier. They've been catching fish like crazy for
the last two days. Yesterday they caught a 48 pound Cobia and a kingfish
was biting on their lines; today a barracuda was doing the same and scaring
away lots of the smaller fish. But they've been catching mackerel, blues,
spot, croakers and sea mullet. At The Hatteras Marina (next to the ferry), Meredith reports that the offshore boats that go out for the day have been catching dolphin, white and blue marlin, and sailfish. They've been sending out three or four boats a day for the last two weeks and they've all been catching fish, big fish. The tuna is gone but the sailfish are plentiful. A full day boat trip runs $800 to $900 and a half day boat $450. Meredith recommends saving your money for a full day trip or going out on the head boat that leaves on Thursdays (Adults $100, Children $80.) |
