'Gators in Frisco
Reptiles sighted near local ponds
American alligators have been spotted near the man-made
ponds off Spencer Lane in Frisco. One is reported to be between eight
and twelve feet long. Local residents and tourists are understandably
concerned for their children, pets and wildlife in the area.
Alligators are indigenous to the area, but generally aren't found north
of North Carolina. Residents of the Spencer Woods area say they have seen
about seven alligators in their neighborhood and are worried because the
population seems to be increasing.
The Island Breeze reported several stories from concerned citizens.
Bob Walkowicz saw alligator tracks underneath his house. Greg Montelione,
who rides his bike along Spencer Lane, was startled by a hiss on the side
of the road in mid-November. He's convinced it was one of the alligators
slipping into the pond. Jeannie Cox noticed both of her cats' tails were
missing. She is convinced the alligators are responsible.
If you come across an alligator, the Wildlife Commission recommends leaving
it alone. Don't throw things at it or try to catch it. Don't make the
alligator think you are approaching it. Stay at least 60 feet away, if
possible.
