Half Vast Enterprises is the brainchild of Rick and Shelby Kinnaird
from Avon, NC. Why the wacky name? Rick needed a commercial
for a community show and wrote the following joke: “Brought
to you by R. F. Kinnaird Enterprises, a semi-large firm. Some people
call it the most ‘half vast enterprise’ they’ve
ever seen.” When the Kinnairds needed a name for the rental
business, Rick’s first thought was “Half Vast Enterprises.”
Rick first came to the Outer Banks to fly kites in the 1970’s
and he’s been coming back ever since. He is an internationally
recognized “tethered aerodyne” (i.e. kite) expert and
is the voice of the Smithsonian
Kite Festival on the Mall in Washington, DC every year in the
early Spring. He is a writer and hopes to publish his first novel
in 2008.
Shelby has been coming to the Outer Banks about every year for most
of her life. After spending 18 years in the computer business, she
is now a freelance graphic designer, web developer and writer. She
also loves to cook. One day she hopes to combine all of her passions
by writing and designing a cookbook (with a companion web site,
of course).
Rick & Shelby each always knew they loved the Outer Banks (Corolla
to Nags Head), but they discovered Hatteras Island together. They
like its unique, hometown feel. They settled on the sound side for
the wind, the calm and the sunsets. They got married at Sound Mind
& Body in June 2004.
The Bar Harbor View Cottage in Maine was the retirement home of
Rick's parents. He inherited the property when they passed away.
Rick & Shelby love Maine as well and spend at least two weeks
a year kayaking, hiking and watching gorgeous sunrises over Cadillac
Mountain from the deck.
